Bulk Assignment Products to various Shipping Profiles

Topic summary

Bulk assigning products to specific shipping profiles is not supported natively in Shopify’s Admin. New products default to the General Shipping Profile. Shopify staff suggest third‑party apps (e.g., Better Shipping, Automate/Automated Shipping Profiles) and note feedback has been passed to developers, with no timeline and updates only via the changelog.

Options shared:

  • Automated Shipping Profiles app: define rules, run a bulk sync to sort products; no carrier‑calculated rates needed; no ongoing app cost once done; can keep installed to auto‑assign new products.
  • Workarounds: use the product search bar filters when adding items to a profile (e.g., tag:xyz, vendor:xyz, product_type) and pre‑tag products (e.g., by location). Duplicating product templates can save time.

Requests and comparisons:

  • Merchants want the ability to set a shipping profile during product creation, similar to Etsy/Amazon (images were provided for reference).

Concerns voiced:

  • Reliance on paid apps, potential leftover code, performance slowdowns, and plan limitations; frustration that this remains missing after 2–3+ years.

Current status: Unresolved/ongoing. No native bulk editor or product-creation option for shipping profile assignment; third‑party apps and search/filter workarounds are the practical paths today.

Thanks @Olivia_2 for update.

If anyone spending ton of time selecting products, we discovered that search bar supports text filtering. So you can do things like “tag:xyz” which would automatically filter down associated products. I haven’t tried other filters like “product_type, published” but I’m sure they would work out too.
