I’m on the Starter plan and using the BuyButton.js on an external website. After the checkout, the user gets redirected to the thank you page of the shopify store. How can I redirect to the website where the buybutton.js is used? Alternatively: Is there a way to change the thank you page somehow so that the user somehow can get back to the external website? Thank you.
Hi @wolf-gang ,
While it’s not possible to redirect from the Thank You page, you can add a call to action in there that allows the user to go back to the external website they came from. For that you will need the Checkout Blocks App.
Once you install it in your store look for the app in your Shopify Admin Dashboard and you should see something like this
Click on Blocks and then Create block. From there select Dynamic content and next Blank template.
Once in there give your block a name, this will only be visible to you, so something like “Thank You Page Call to Action” can work.
In Content items select Button and there you can select the button type to either be Primary, Secondary, or a Link. I suggest you pick Link but any of these will work so feel free to play around with the options.
In there you can set a Url for the button and the label (text visible to the customer when they see the button), as well as picking the alignment and whether the button is full width or not.
You can leave all other settings as is and your final result should look something like this
If you change the Block ID make sure to take note on what number you placed there as you will need that later.
Once saved change the Status of the block to Active
Next from the Shopify Admin go to Settings > Checkout and for your live checkout click on Customize
Once in there click on the dropdown in the top bar’s center that says “Checkout” and select “Thank You”
Once there click on Apps
And look for Checkout Blocks > Dynamic content and click on the + icon. It will open a pop-up with the options Thank you and Order status, select Thank you. That will add the block to the Thank you page and now you have to set it up so it picks the one you just created from the Checkout Blocks app. For that update the Block ID setting to match the ID you used when creating the block (if you left the default value then this should be 0) and you should be able to see the block now
In case you want to change its position click on Sections on the leftmost sidebar and from there you should be able to hover over Dynamic content to drag and drop it where you want it to be.
Hope that helps!
Thank you for your answer. However this doesn’t seem to be possible on the Starter Theme. Is there any other way for example to add a custom app to the thank you page?
Hey,
This is not possible except Shopify Plus plan. You cannot use any checkout extention for the Starter, Advance or Shopify plan.
Thank you for the answer. I have to say this is really frustrating. It’s fine if this is not possible but somehow it should be communicated.
For the Starter plan it is not possible, however you can add extensions to the Thank You Page starting from the Basic plan. Checkout extensions are the ones which are exclusive to Plus at the moment.
Merchants on the Basic Shopify plan or higher can use the dynamic blocks, and can place them only on their Thank you and Order status pages.

So if it makes sense for your business then maybe consider upgrading to Basic to be able to add extensions in the Thank You page.
For the starter plan, there’s some assumptions. Not ready to invest. Not ready to commit. So there’s really no reason there should be a redirect allowed after checkout. The standard thank you page will suffice.
