Can anyone recommend a knowledge base app that allows nested categories?

Topic summary

A user is searching for a Shopify knowledge base app that supports nested categories (categories within categories). Their specific use case involves organizing troubleshooting content hierarchically—for example, a main “Troubleshooting” category containing subcategories for microphones, earpieces, lifters, and headset bases, with product-specific articles nested within those.

Current Challenge:
All tested apps allow unlimited category creation but lack the ability to nest categories within one another.

Suggestions Received:

  • Help Center HQ by AppHQ: Recommended as a solution, though the description focuses on placing articles into categories rather than explicitly confirming nested category support. Offers a 7-day free trial, then $15.99/month.
  • Custom-built solution: Another user shared an example of a custom page with nested functionality (states/countries), offering assistance if needed.

Status: The discussion remains open, with no confirmed solution yet for true nested category functionality.

Hi All,

My Team and I have been testing out different knowledge base apps the past several days. So far every one has been 90% of what we’re looking for but missing a big feature on our checklist: the ability to nest categories inside other categories. For example inside the “troubleshooting” category we’d like to have additional categories for microphones, earpieces, lifters, headset bases, and so on. Then articles on specific models of product inside those sub-categories.

Every knowledge base app we’ve found so far allows for unlimited category making, but it doesn’t allow us to insert categories into other categories. Does anyone know of an app that will allow for that?

Hey, @OfficeAlly

Have you checked out the Help Center HQ app by AppHQ? They allow you to create categories and place what they call ‘articles’ into each category. For example, You could create a category called “Troubleshooting” and then have 5 ‘articles’ for each individual product you offer (microphones, lifters, earpieces, etc). They offer a 7-day free trial and then it’s $15.99/month.

I hope this helps! If there is anything else I can help you with, please let me know.

Take a look at at the functionality of this custom page I built. Similar to what you’re looking for I believe. (Here I have nested state and country in the example link) Let me know If I can help!
