Can certain customers be excluded from minimum order quantity requirements?

We are looking for an app to add to our store with the option to exclude MOQ from certain customers.

We sell salon supplies but also have our own salons, which they order their stock off our website at special wholesale prices through another app as a tagged customer.

What we’re after…

For a particular product, we want general customers to purchase MOQ of 5 (no discount, just sell as a minimum requirement), but for our salons, they have no minimum order requirements on this product.

Is it possible to exclude particular tagged customers from purchasing at MOQ, or a way around this?

I understand what you’re trying to achieve. You have wholesale customers and retail customers, and you want retail customers to have a MOQ of 5 products, but exempt the wholesale customers from this requirement.

The only way of excluding customers from certain exemptions is to use something like the Locksmith app. With this app, you could hide certain products and/or collections behind a wall so that only customers with a certain tag can access them. It sounds, in fact, like you may already be using this app.

So what I would suggest as a workaround is that you create product bundles, using an app like Bundle Products. You could sell a bottle of a particular shampoo, for example, in bundles of 5 to the average retail customer.

Then you could have a collection of individual products hidden behind the Locksmith wall! That is, products that are not bundled together by the app.

We are indeed using locksmith for a few other items, but they only sell as a singular product so that is fine.

We did think of trying this but our concern is that for inventory tracking purposes, having the duplicate product and SKU might be an issue. Do you have any suggestions around this?

Great question and I understand your concern!

When it comes to apps like the Bundle Products, they do not duplicate products but simply bundle existing products together - meaning that the inventory should be tracked as normal.

In other words, a Bundle app is drawing from the same pool of products, so it isn’t duplicating anything, it’s simply combining existing products for the sake of a bundle. You then display these bundles to the customers that you want to show them to.

As Andrew said you can bundle up SKUs for all customers. Although this new bundle item can have a SKU it will technically just be a virtual item that contains the bundle components.

For example:

Product Single - SKU A

Product 5 Pack - Bundle of SKU A x 5

There are theme based and backend based bundle apps. You probably want something that lets you create virtual bundles so when the customer checks out they only see the bundle order line. Our bundle app will let you connect up your products to correct SKUs and it will then update their inventory based on the component stock level. So in above example the 5 pack stock would get calculated based on the individual stock levels. This means you wouldn’t need to keep track of the bundle stock.

We also have the additional option of unbundling orders made for a bundled product into the component SKUs post purchase. This means that when the 5 pack sells it will get changed to 5 x the single SKU which will automatically reduce the stock of the single item variant.
