Can changing my shipping address impact sales tax and shipping rates?

Hello!

I’m currently still new to Shopify. This is an online business from home. I only had 2 orders due to learning how to set up the website correctly. However I do have a question or few in mind regarding my topic.

  1. I have a UPS Business Mailbox Address since I can’t use a PO box address in California and would like to use it instead of my Home address when shown on invoices , shipping labels and everywhere.

  2. By doing this, does this affect my sales tax, zones and along with shipping rates? Do I have to stick with my original home address for it to not cause much trouble or should I find a different alternative option to help with this?

I understand you’re looking to replace your home address with your UPS Business Mailbox address. You don’t actually need to replace the address on your invoice, as you can change this specifically for your shipping labels. However, if you’d like to change this for your invoice, you can do so under the General settings (‘Settings > General’) within your admin.

If you’d like to change the address for the shipping labels, then you can edit/update your address in the Location settings (‘Settings > Locations’). That being said, if you add more than one address into the Location settings, then you’ll also need to remember to change the shipping from address in your shipping profiles (‘Settings > Shipping & delivery > Shipping > Manage rates > Shipping from’).

I can’t be sure whether this would or would not affect your sales tax in California, as I’m not able to provide that level of tax advice. If you’ve registered your business using your home address, it is an option to keep the address in the General settings as is for taxation purposes and only adjust your shipping labels. However, I’d recommend speaking with a local tax advisor or checking out our guide on setting up taxes, so you can get the most accurate information for where your business operates from.
