Can customers build personalized skincare routines online?

I run a skincare brand and my inbox is constantly flooded with the same questions. Customers keep asking what to use for their skin type and what routine they should follow.

I really want to let them build their own personalized routine directly on the website.

Is that possible? Has anyone done this? Would love some advice.

Hey @Felicia9 .

Hope you are having a good day!

Yes, totally possible, use a SkincareQuizapp like Octane AI or Typeform.

Customer answers a few questions about their skincare and gets a personalized routine with product recommendations automatically.

Works great for skin brands.

Yes, that’s possible.

For a skincare brand, I’d suggest creating a separate Bundle Builder or Bundle Product page for each skin type. For example:

Build a Routine for Oily Skin
Build a Routine for Dry Skin
Build a Routine for Sensitive Skin

Inside each bundle, you can guide customers through routine steps like:

Cleanser → Toner → Serum → Moisturizer → Sunscreen

The benefit is that customers feel guided, but they still have control over what they choose. It also helps you increase AOV because they are encouraged to buy a complete routine instead of just one product.

For the setup, you have to use a bundle builder or bundle product page app. For example, if using BOGOS app, the main difference is:

  • Bundle Builder → create a standalone bundle page where customers can go through each step and choose products to complete their routine. This is better if you want a more interactive “build your routine” experience.

  • Bundle product page → same as bundle builder, but it creates a product for your bundle. Customers build their own bundle to get your (tiered) discount directly on a product page. This product can be searched for too.

Yes, it is absolutely possible and a great way to save time.

Interactive Product Page Builder: Use an option-builder app to create a step-by-step selection grid on a single product page. Customers can visually select their skin type, then use checkboxes or swatches to add their matching cleanser, toner, and moisturizer to their cart all at once.

Guided Skin Quiz: Install a product quiz app (like Octane AI or RevenueHunt). Customers answer 4–5 questions about their skin concerns, and the quiz automatically recommends and bundles the perfect routine for them at checkout.

Both methods educate your customers instantly, giving them the confidence to buy without needing to email your inbox.

Yes, our app, BYOB - Build Your Own Bundles can support a quiz-style bundle builder. You can try the sample bundles here to see they are suitable for you:

Our app has been generating more than 1M bundle orders from our merchants since we launched. This guided bundle is a new initiative to offer guided selling to customers.

Hi, this is Vineet from Identixweb, a Shopify Development Agency

Yes, this is definitely possible.

For a skincare store, the cleanest way is usually to add a product recommendation quiz or routine builder on the website. You can ask customers about their skin type, concerns, sensitivity, budget, and current routine, then show a personalized routine with recommended products.

For example, the result page could show something like:

Cleanser
Toner
Serum
Moisturizer
Sunscreen

Then customers can add the full routine to the cart or choose only the products they want.

There are Shopify apps that can help with quiz-based product recommendations, and if you want a very specific routine flow or design, a custom section/app can also be built. Just make sure the recommendations are based on clear rules and avoid making medical claims unless they are properly supported.

Body seems unclear, is it a complete sentence

Yes, absolutely. Many skincare brands now allow customers to build personalized skincare routines online through quizzes, skin assessments, and AI-powered recommendations.
Personalized skincare routines can improve the shopping experience, help customers discover suitable products more quickly, and increase confidence in purchasing decisions. However, recommendations should not replace professional medical advice for serious skin conditions.

It sounds like you’re trying to move the skincare shopping experience away from repetitive inbox questions into a more automated flow where customers can understand their skin type and build their own routine directly on your website, right?

This type of setup is usually split into two distinct layers.

  • The first layer is the recommendation or guidance step. This is where you help customers identify what skincare routine they should follow based on simple inputs like skin type, skin concerns, or skincare goals. The purpose of this step is to reduce support load by proactively guiding customers instead of answering the same questions repeatedly in chat. This can typically be implemented using a multi-step quiz or simple rule-based logic such as “oily skin → routine A, dry skin → routine B”.

  • The second layer is where customers actually build and purchase their skincare routine as a complete set. After they understand which routine is suitable for them, they can select individual products like cleanser, serum, and moisturizer and combine them into a single purchase. For this part, you can use Easify Box Bundle Builder BYOB to create a “Build your skincare routine box” experience, where customers follow a structured step-by-step flow and the system automatically bundles everything into one order, with optional discounts if needed.

I also built a similar demo so you can take a look and get a clearer idea of how the flow works in practice and how customers interact with it end-to-end.

The key advantage of this approach is that you control the entire journey on your store instead of relying on fragmented purchases or repeated support conversations, while also delivering a more structured and personalized shopping experience.

In short, the first part is about helping customers decide what they need, and the second part is about giving them the tool to build and purchase the full routine.:purple_heart:

Hey @Felicia9

Yes, this is absolutely possible and it’s actually one of the most effective ways skincare brands reduce repetitive customer support while increasing conversions at the same time.

What you are describing is usually called a personalized routine builder or a guided skin quiz that turns into a product recommendation flow. Instead of customers writing to you asking what they should use for their skin type, they go through a structured experience directly on the website where they answer a few simple questions about their skin concerns, their goals, and sometimes even their current routine. Based on that input, the system builds a complete skincare routine for them using your actual products, usually arranged in the correct order of use so it feels like a clear step by step plan rather than a list of random items.

The reason this works so well is because skincare is not just about individual products but about combinations and consistency. Most confusion happens when customers are unsure what order to use things in or whether products fit together. A system like this removes that uncertainty completely and replaces it with a guided experience that feels personal even though it is automated. That directly reduces inbox questions because users feel they already got a consultation on the site itself.

On Shopify this is typically implemented through apps that sit on top of your product catalog and logic rules. They take customer input and map it to product recommendations and routine structures. One solution that was built specifically for this problem is an app called Ritual, which we created. The idea behind it was exactly this frustration of brands constantly answering the same skincare questions over and over again while losing potential conversions in the process. Ritual allows a brand to build a fully guided routine experience inside their store where the customer does not just get recommended products but actually sees a complete routine that makes sense step by step, almost like a digital skincare consultation.

The important part is that it does not just increase automation but also improves how the brand feels to the customer. Instead of a basic store where people browse products, it becomes an interactive experience where they feel understood and guided. That usually leads to higher trust and better purchase confidence, especially in skincare where hesitation is very common.

So in short, yes it is possible, it is already being used by many modern skincare brands, and tools like Ritual exist specifically to solve this problem by turning repetitive questions into a structured guided routine directly on the website.

Cheers,

Nemanja J.

Hi @felicia9,

I hope you’re having a great day.

Yes, there are several ways to set up a personalized skincare routine experience on your store.

1. Skin Quiz (Most Popular Option)
This is the most common solution. Customers answer a series of questions, such as their skin type, skin concerns, sensitivity level, and skincare goals. Based on their responses, the quiz recommends the most suitable products and a personalized skincare routine.

2. Interactive Routine Builder
With this approach, customers can select their skin type, specific skin concerns, and budget. The system then generates a customized skincare routine and recommends products based on their selections.

3. AI Skincare Consultant
An AI-powered chatbot can act as a virtual skincare consultant. It can ask customers relevant questions, guide them through a personalized consultation, and recommend products based on the conversation and the customer’s needs.

There are several other ways to implement a personalized skincare experience, but these are the three most effective and commonly used solutions for skincare brands.

Please let me know if you’d like to discuss these options further. I’d be happy to help determine which solution would work best for your store.

Best regards,
Rohail

a product quiz is the fastest way to solve this. octane AI integrates directly with shopify and can auto-recommend products based on answers, which is perfect for skincare where people don’t know what they need. the key is keeping it to 4-5 questions max though. any longer and people abandon it halfway through.

the other thing worth adding is a simple “which routine is right for you” comparison section on the homepage. not a full quiz, just a visual grid showing skin type > recommended products. sometimes people don’t want to take a quiz, they just want to see at a glance which products are for them. that alone should cut your inbox questions in half.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I’ll try out the apps you recommended.
