Can editing the Order ID format in settings impact all order numbers?

We are hoping to differentiate our order numbers based on the sales channel (so that our 3PL can prioritize based on contract requirements). Does anyone know if editing the Order ID format in settings impacts all order numbers or only the ones generated in the Shopify store (rather than those brought through another app / EDI connection)?
