Can expired themes be recovered on ecommerce platforms?

I’ve had my store since July 2017 and I’ve utilized a free theme. Because I have a very large inventory in October 2018 I purchased the “sunrise” theme. Well I didn’t customize the theme immediately because of a bunch of reason. Well now I’m in the process of redoing my site because my conversion rate is ridiculous (459 visitors this morning and not a sale.) I believe the primary reason is because of navigation issues. Well I clicked on the Sunrise theme to play around with it only to find a link to re-purchase it. I contacted the developer only to be told it’s something with Shopify. Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a way for me to recover the theme? I really like the theme and don’t want to have to spend another $180.

Hi @DHC ,

Ted here from Shopify, thanks for reaching out to us!

Great question! So in short, if you’ve purchased a theme with Shopify from our Theme Store, you can download a new version of that theme at any stage. You won’t need to purchase the theme again but we would always recommend confirming this with the theme developer’s customer service first. I’ve checked the developer’s site on your behalf (here) and it looks like you’re welcome to update the theme so you should be able to do so as shown in this guide.

We would recommend making sure to sign in with the correct account when updating the theme, otherwise, it might appear as though you’ve to re-purchase it. For example, merchants with two Shopify accounts would need to make sure that they are signing in with the correct account to update the theme. As you’ve mentioned that you chatted with the developer, were they able to find the original theme invoice associated with your store? If you log into your admin and click Settings > Billing > View all billing history, can you find the invoice?

Many thanks,
