Can I add a fourth product status on my e-commerce platform?

Does anyone know if it’s possible to add an additional product status other than “Active” “Archived” or “Draft”?

I need a 4th status but am not sure if I can edit code or need an app? Anyone have experience with updating this feature?

There’s no way to add custom product status

Regardless this seems like an XY problem, what is the GOAL?

We would like to add an “On Hold” status for products that are in a limbo status from vendors.

And in what way is this different from a product being out of stock? i.e. disabling "Continue selling when out of stock " inventory setting

  1. If the product isn’t to be seeable by customers, unpublish it.
  2. If the product is to be seeable to customers use a theme that displays out of stock messaging, and or customize that messaging or make an alternate template for such goods to display as “on hold”.
  3. If you need staff to be able to find such goods in the admin use tags or smart collections
    1. If the product are hidden from customers then also retitle the products to prepend "ON HOLD - " to the product title, this will not change the products url.
    2. Use automation apps like usemechanic or services like zapier to automate these steps with a tag or other process
    3. There’s also setting the product-status to “archive” if you really want to make staff pay attention to what’s going on with a product
