A store owner wants to customize shipping rates based on zones and product weight but currently has flat $10-15 rates. They’re unsure whether upgrading their Shopify plan is necessary for these changes.
Manual Fulfillment Options:
No upgrade needed if handling shipping manually after orders are placed
Built-in Shopify settings allow creating shipping zones by region/country and setting weight-based or flat rates
Access via: Online Store → Settings → Shipping and Delivery
Third-Party Integration Requirements:
Integrating carriers like TNT or AusPost for live calculated rates requires the Carrier Calculated Shipping (CCS) feature
CCS is available on Shopify or Advanced plans: $20/month add-on (free on annual Shopify or monthly Advanced plans)
Orders can still be fulfilled manually even with third-party rate calculation
Alternative Approach:
Consider whether CCS costs justify the benefits versus using flat-rate shipping
Tool Suggestion:
A community member recommended an app for bulk importing shipping rates via CSV and setting default shipping profiles for new products.

I am a store owner with a Shopify store, and I am experiencing some issues with the shipping method. Currently, the default shipping rates are $10-15, and they do not differentiate between shipping zones or product weight. I have read on Shopify that if I want to connect with a third-party shipping provider, I need to upgrade my account to Advanced Shopify or Shopify Plus. However, I am only interested in calculating shipping rates for my customers based on market rates and fulfilling orders manually.
My question is, do I need to upgrade my Shopify plan to a higher level if I will be handling shipping myself after the customer places an order? I would like to avoid any unnecessary expenses if possible.
Please advise me on the best course of action, and let me know if there are any other options available for me to adjust the shipping rates and zones without upgrading my plan. Thank you for your help.
No, you do not need to upgrade your Shopify plan to a higher level if you plan to handle shipping manually after the customer places an order.
To set up manual fulfillment and calculate shipping rates based on market rates or product weight, you can use Shopify’s built-in shipping settings. You can create shipping zones based on regions or countries, set up weight-based shipping rates, or set up flat shipping rates for specific products or orders: Go to Online store → Settings → Shipping and delivery → customize shipping zones, rates, and fulfillment options.
Thank you for your reply. If I integrate a third-party shipping provider, such as TNT or Aupost, to obtain more accurate and reasonable shipping rates for my customers, will I be able to fulfill the orders myself after the customer has placed an order? The main purpose of integrating with the third-party provider is to calculate the shipping rates for customers at the time of purchase.
You can certainly fulfill your orders manually or purchase shipping labels outside of Shopify even if you integrate a third-party app to show your customers live calculated rates. However, in order to use the third-party shipping app and display live calculated rates, you’ll still need the Carrier Calculated Shipping (CCS) feature in your account which is accessible when your store is on the Shopify plan or Advanced plan. It’s a $20 monthly add-on to the Shopify plan, but it is free when you’re on the annual Shopify plan or monthly Advanced plan.
While showing live calculated rates at your checkout may seem like the best setup, I suggest taking some time to consider whether the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. One possible disadvantage is the cost so it’s important to determine whether the convenience the feature brings will translate into sales that can cover the expenses associated with adding CCS.
If this isn’t an economical option, you can consider setting up flat rate shipping rates instead. They also have their own advantages. Not only are they consistent, which makes it easier for customers to understand, but you also have control over what a customer is charged at the checkout. You can have a competitive advantage over other sellers who charge calculated shipping rates as flat rate shipping rates can make shopping in your store more attractive to customers who are looking for a simple and predictable shopping experience.

Hey, as you might notice setting up the shipping rates by hand can be a tedious task, so I made this little app that allows to import shipping rates from a csv file, it’s at: https://apps.shopify.com/toolify-shipping
You will also notice that shopify has no “Default shipping profile” feature, so all newly created products will end up in your General profile instead of the one you’re using, well this app does that too^^
Hoping that will spare you some time setting all this up.
