Hello, I want to start my own clothing brand but I am aware of the possibilities of refunds and charge-backs. I am afraid to offer those because I don’t know how I would be able to resell anything if it gets refunded. For any clothing brand owners out there, or generally any brand owner, I was wondering if having an option to not offer refunds and charge-backs are available and even possible? If I send 100 hoodies but 20 of them get refunded for partial reasons, I wont be able to gain much profit. And if I send them out and they get refunded then what could I do? I was wondering that because i also heard that you can try and get your money back through bank accounts and not only through personal requests, and as a small, not even built business owner this is kind of stressing me out.
Hi @daniel190
This is a great question to ask, and I definitely understand your concerns. Chargebacks are a regular part of operating a retail business, but there are steps you can take to help minimize the risks of them.
The first step is to ensure that customer do have a valid way to dispute order concerns with you. They need to be able to contact you, discuss order problems and have viable ways to resolve their concerns. Customers who are not able to resolve order concerns with the store are more likely to open a chargeback.
Mitigating order risk on your end is also an important step. Make sure you have enabled your payment gateway’s fraud prevention features as well. If using Shopify Payments, you can find more information about this here: Configuring Shopify Payments. You can also read more about steps you can take to catch high risk orders before fulfilling them here: Help Center - Preventing Fraud.
Lastly, it’s important to note that you cannot stop a customer from opening a chargeback. A chargeback can be opened by a customer for any purchase they make so long as their bank supports it. There are multiple reasons a customer can open a chargeback and not all of them are dependent on the store’s return/exchange policy. If a customer opens a chargeback you will need to submit evidence within the available window of time proving that you fulfilled all aspects of your side of the transaction.
