Can I change themes from Dawn to Debut without losing content?

l would like to explore changing themes from Dawn to Debut but when I publish to Debut, the content (Product photos, product description, testimonials, etc) is not carried over. Is this normally the case or am I missing something?

Hi @Apotheke

If you change theme content will not be moved.
because customizer content working according to theme.

Products, collections, pages, blog articles and navigation will remain unchanged, they’re not attached to the theme. However, which products show up in the theme, what the navigation menu looks like and how all the content is displayed (layout, photos, etc.) will depend on the theme.

Any content entered directly in the theme editor, e. g. text entered into text fields, is stored in the theme. Images uploaded via the theme editor are stored in the admin and don’t have to be re-uploaded, but you’ll have to add them wherever you want them to be in the new theme’s theme editor.

Note that if you switch from Dawn to Debut you will lose some functionality because Debut isn’t compatible with OS 2.0. If, for example, you’ve set up dynamic sources in Dawn, you won’t be able to use those in Debut.

Yeah. Only the products and account type settings transfer.

So if you want to see both, you have to build both. ( I did this exact thing you are talking about in the last week)

However you won’t lose any work that you did. When you publish one, the other just stays behind and drops down.

The idea is that you would build the other then publish when you are done. In the meantime, the first one is still sitting up top.

By the way, here’s a helpful tip if you have to change code, and you are afraid to mess up your site.

So if you have a theme you like, on the Actions Button, instead of hitting Edit Code, instead click Duplicate.

It will create a Duplicate Website of what you are working on. Then, go down to that one and play with editing that code. You’ll be able to preview the changes and see if you like it. If you totally mess it up, no problem…just delete it and duplicate the original again.

The nice part is if you like the changes and everything worked, now you know what code, and where to place it, so you will go back up to the published one, and go add the code in the correct places.
