I am sorry to hear that someone used your code.
My answer below is a combination of some research and it is not specific to Shopify app code, it is for all kinds of virtual code copyright.
Certain things to know first. . .
- You have no practical legal right “COPYRIGHT” to stand
- Taking legal actions has no assurance of wining especially for “virtual code” copyright however it comes with a headache and frustration by which you may lose focus on your business.
Before taking any actions you should consider How much time, money, and stress it may cause you.
However if you want to initiate,
You can start by hiring your local city lawyer with low fees.
Discuss the scenario with him a prepare a Lawyer’s letter for the malefactor. This letter will have information and some legal terms, about your claim over your code. You can send up to 3 letters to the firm/person who copied your code. Laws may be different from country to country.
Here are the possibilities of what can happen:
In most cases, people apologize and remove the code (after the 2nd or 3rd letter).
Some may ignore the letter, in this case, if you think your code is worth $$$, you are allowed to file a file suit against this person.
Again keep in mind how much time, money, and stress it is causing you?
Now, what will I advise? If you believe your product is good, you should focus on How can you improve it? How to secure your code? How to make the code unavailable to the public? By learning these you will not only improve your skills but save yourself from losing money, time and effort.
In the end, it is more important to have mental peace than having an intense amount of stress.
