I have a main domain that I want to keep separate from the shop, do I have to connect Shopify to my main domain? Or am I able to connect it to a sub-domain? Please let me know how that works. Thanks

You can connect a third-party subdomain to Shopify and use a subset of your domain, like shop.yourstore.com. Simply add Shopify’s CNAME record (ie. shops.myshopify.com) to the DNS of your subdomain.
That being said, since the root domain won’t be connected to Shopify, then you wouldn’t be able to use yourstore.com as this will require setting up the A record (ie. 23.227.38.65) from connecting a third-party domain to Shopify.
