Can I create/apply a variant to multiple items, including future changes?

We’re thinking about switching to Shopify from our existing ecommerce platform. One of the features we use heavily and would like to use on Shopify is the ability to create a variant that can be applied to items after-the-fact. Then if I need to make a change to the variant, the change applies to all items that variant was assigned to.

A trivial example would be something like a dropdown menu for shirt sizes, with options ‘extra-small’, ‘small’, ‘medium’, ‘large’. I could apply that to every shirt on the store. Then in 6 months if we decide that ‘extra-small’ never sells, I just remove it from the master variant, and it disappears from all items that variant was assigned to.

I’ve done some reading online and I see there are ways to fumble through replicating this behavior by doing bulk imports etc, but I’m wondering if there’s a better solution

We have an app called the Ablestar Bulk Product Editor, which could kind of help with that.

Shopify doesn’t have an idea of a “master variant” but you could do a bulk edit to add or remove a specific variant from a bunch of products at once.

Bulk Product Editor also has a free version available that allows for 5 edits in any 30 day period, and each edit can consist of up to all the products on the store, so you can try it out without incurring any costs.
