if i start with the basic package will i get professional reports for past info when i upgrade?

You’re right. If you upgrade from a basic plan to a Shopify or Advanced plan, then the additional reports will be available to access and provide data from the time you started using Shopify.
Also, you can access more advanced and different types of reports such as customer reports, profit reports, etc, and create a custom report on your own ( available on the Advanced and Plus plan).

There are apps that provide better reporting and are cheaper than upgrading your Shopify plan. Report Toaster, Advanced Reports, Better Reports, etc.
