Can I link different subdomains to Magento and Shopify?

if I have linked uk.brand.com to our Magento site, can I link shop.uk.brand.com to the Shopify platform?

Hi @Alvy ,

I just checked in the Shopify backend if this is possible and I can confirm it is (see screenshot), it would just be a matter of entering the domain in the Shopify backend and following the instructions to setup a CNAME record on your domain providers admin panel. As long as you don’t edit the record for you Magento site, both should run on separate sub-domains.

Hey, @Alvy .

Thank you for reaching out and posting this question!

I understand that you have a domain connected to your Magento site and you’d like to know whether you can link a subdomain to Shopify. While @CodeGoblin has already confirmed this, I’d like to add that you can connect up to 20 domains or subdomains to a Shopify account.

For others that may be dealing with a similar issue and coming across this thread, I’d like to clarify that a subdomain is a subset of the root domain which allows you to add a prefix to the domain (eg. www). As an example, in the URL community.shopify.com, the shopify.com is the root domain and community is the subdomain.

If your domain was purchased from Shopify, then you can add a subdomain for your Shopify-managed domain. However, if your domain was purchased from a third-party provider, then you’ll need to follow our steps for connecting a third-party subdomain to Shopify.

I’d love to hear more about your business! What kinds of products do you sell? How are you finding the Shopify platform? Are you exploring migrating your store from Magento?

Thanks Elias.

Just double check if there would be a restriction to use shop.brand.country? i.e I have linked uk.brand.com to Magento website, can I use brand.uk in Shopify?

Hey, @Alvy .

Thank you for following up!

You can connect a UK version of your domain and use that with your Shopify store. However, unlike subdomains, where you can create several subsets using one root domain (eg. shopify.com) and create links like community.shopify.com or shop.shopify.com, you would need to purchase domain extensions (eg. shopify.ca, shopify.co.uk) separately as they are top-level or root domains.

If you’re open to the idea of having multiple stores, then it’s quite common for businesses that have a domain for each country that they sell to or have a physical presence in as this enables them to have online stores in multiple languages without using a translator app and these merchants can process orders in the local currency of their customers.
