Hey there,
Is there a way or an app anyone recommend to make a discount code for one item? For example, 20% off of one item. I would like to use this as a reward so the less complicated to make the better.
Thanks

A merchant asks how to create a discount code that applies to only one item in the cart, even when customers purchase multiple eligible products.
Initial Solution:
Recommended Workaround:
Since native Shopify discounts can’t limit to a single item when multiples are present, two apps are suggested:
Both offer free trial periods for testing.
Related Question:
Another user asks about creating a “choose your free item” promotion. They attempted using a Buy X Get Y discount with a fake €0 “Free gift” product, but the system always selects the cheapest cart item as the free gift rather than allowing customer choice. They’re seeking a way to let customers select which item receives the discount.

Hi, @Duchess !
Rae from Shopify here. Thanks for reaching out with this question!
You can absolutely create a percentage discount that applies to only one item. While some apps may help with this, you can also create this discount directly in the ‘Discounts’ section of your Shopify admin by following these steps. In order to make sure this applies to only one product, it’s important to follow step 5 here and under ‘Applies to’, ensure you’ve selected the specific product you’d like to discount.
I know you mentioned that you’re hoping for this discount to be as easy to use as possible, so I wanted to suggest using an automatic discount. These types of discounts are great for customer ease, as once the customer adds the eligible product into their cart, the discount will automatically apply, removing the need for the customer to manually enter a discount code into the checkout. You can learn more about this here.
If you’re unsure which type of discount code would be the best to use for the sale you’re running, then check out this blog post for some more insight and advice on this.
Do you have any plans to advertise this reward? If you haven’t run any ads yet, but you’d like to get started, I recommend reading over this blog post for more information on how to create Facebook and Google ads directly within your Shopify admin.
Let me know if you run into any troubles with creating this discount code, and I’ll be happy to help out!
So I would choose the item this apply to? what if they have multiply items in the cart and they are all in the list? Can I make it so it will take off of one item in the cart ?
Hi, @Duchess !
Thanks for getting back to me with these questions.
If you’re setting up your discount code directly in your Shopify admin, you can absolutely choose which products the discount code can be used on. To set this up, just follow step 5 here under the ‘Applies to’ section. The option will look like this in your admin:
When creating the discount code this way, if the customer adds multiple applicable products to their cart, each applicable product will be discounted by 20%, and the discount won’t be limited to one product only.
However, it sounds like you’re looking to discount only one product by 20%, despite how many applicable products are added into the cart. If this is the case, I suggest looking into using an app instead. One of these options would be great to consider:
Both of these apps offer a free trial period, so I recommend using that to test them out first to make sure they’ll suit your needs. If you have any questions or concerns about using these apps, or the charges that are associated, please feel free to reach out to the app developers directly for more information.
These details should get you on the right track, but let me know if there’s anything else I can help out with!
Hey there,
in addition to the topic above. How can I create a voucher code that gives a customer one out of any item in the basket for free? So I have selected 4 shoes in the basket and one should be for free?
Thanks
Tim
Hi! You can set up a Buy X Get Y discount for this type of promotion. Whether you create an automatic discount or manual discount code, you will be able to set minimum quantities to determine how many products the customer needs to buy and how many they get for free. For example, you can create a “buy 4 get 1 free” discount. The discount settings will allow you to select the products or collections that apply to each condition. Let me know if you have any questions about setting this up.
Hi Sophia and thanks for getting back.
the thing is, I dont want the customer to buy anything to get one free, I want to give the customers one item of his/her choice(!) for free.
This is how I would do it:
I create a fake product in the shop lets say “Free gift” for 0 € and create a “Buy X Get Y”.
X is the “Free gift” for 0 € Y is a free product of collection xyz. So far so good BUT
The free gift item is always the cheapest item in the basket, which I need to be the most expansive item.
Do you know what I mean? Is there a way to change this?
Thanks
Tim
