I have signed up to the Shopify Basic service and have successfully created a store but I also want to have another store attached to the same Shopify account so I can manage both stores / sites through the one Shopify portal.
Is this possible, every time I login I am automatically taken to my pawsomepets.com store and cannot see anywhere to add another.

Great question! This is something you can absolutely do. Your merchant account with Shopify is connected through the email address you use to sign into the store(s) you create. If you create another store and use the same email address as your first store to sign in, then they will both be connected to the same merchant account.
You will see the option to choose which store you wish to access when you sign into our Help Center or through www.shopify.com. You will also be able to click on the store name in the upper left of the admin page to see a drop down menu of all available stores connected to your merchant account.
If you wish to create a new store, you can sign up for a new one on any of our main landing pages like www.shopify.com.

Many thanks for the quick response and it makes total sense, except I can only seem to sign up for a free trial using a different email address.
How / where can I create a new store without a a free trial.

You should be able to create a new store from the main www.shopify.com homepage.
Either by using the “Start Free Trial” button or by logging into your account. When logging in through www.shopify.com you will see the option to create a store next to your name.
