Can I restart my closed store with a new brand name?

Hi.

I have recently closed my shopify store. I noticed we can restart within 2 years and the data will have been saved.

I have a question about doing this though to make sure it is the right way for me to go.

  1. Can I restart the store but change the brand? For example. Store was brand A. I want to restart and change to Brand B. Will this cause issues in terms of site design etc?

  2. Will the site design be saved or will I need to re build this from scratch?

I can definitely help you out with this question. Do you mind if I ask what your new business will be? What products are you hoping to sell and what changes would you need to make to your old business?

If you reactivate your store you can change the brand by changing your store name and industry within your Shopify Admin. This can be done by going to Settings > Store details. You can also find the steps written out on this page here. There are some areas I wanted to point out though:

  • Your .myshopify.com URL cannot be changed, but it can be replaced with a custom URL. The .myshopify.com URL that you got when you created the store will remain attached to this account and will be used by Shopify to identify your account. However, if you connect a custom domain, that custom domain will be the one your customers will use and see. You can find more information on adding a custom domain to Shopify on this page here.
  • Your store design will be based off of your old business so there are areas you would need to edit. For example, your logo, the layout of your pages, or references to your old business in your pages, products, policies, etc.

The themes you’ve edited and all of the pages, products, collections, etc. that you created will all remain as you left it as long as you reactivate within 2 years of closing your store. That being said, depending on when you closed your store there may be some new features you might want to take advantage of. For example, we’ve recently starting offering Online store 2.0 themes which allow for much greater customization along with additional benefits explained further on this page here. If you were using one of our vintage themes before closing your store, it might be worth it to consider switching to an Online Store 2.0 theme if you reactivate. If you decide to create a new store I also wanted to let you know how you can transfer your information from one store to the other. You can find the steps on this page here. This will help you so that you don’t have to start completely from scratch if you do choose to create a new store.
