I’m interested in running a report that will show product sales filtered by payment type. For example, I want to see all products sold for a given time period where the payment type used was a gift card.
The report might include:
Date range: YTD
Payment type: Gift Card
Columns: SKU | Product Title | Units Shipped | $s Shipped
Is that possible using the basic reports in Shopify or do I need an app? If so, which app?

You need an app to do this. In general, most reporting apps can solve that problem. Check the Mipler Advanced Reports.

Report Pundit has the option to export the products that have been sold during a specific time frame for the “Gift Card” payment type.
We also have sales by payment gateway, payment method and payout transactions.
The report can be sorted and filtered by payment type, products, and many other fields.
