We are wanting to transfer the domain to another host before next billing cycle but only 4 days are remaining (transfers could take 7 days). Would the best approach be to change to the Pause and Build plan for $9/mo to avoid the $300+ payment, and if so, can I still transfer the domain out while I’m on the Pause and Build plan? If not, what’s the best approach here?

Thanks for reaching out about transferring your domain away from Shopify. To clarify, you are looking to close your store, and transfer your domain away from Shopify before doing so, is that correct? In short, yes, you can still transfer your domain away while on the Pause and Build plan. However, if you are looking to close your store as well, which is why you are trying to avoid your next annual payment, my recommendation is:
- Follow the steps listed in our help document to transfer your domain outside of Shopify.
- Using the authorization code, complete the transfer on your third-party domain hosting portal.
- Close your store before your current billing cycle ends. I recommend reading through our considerations for closing your store before doing so.
Typically the domain transfers are successful and this approach would stop you from paying an unnecessary extra Pause and Build subscription fee. As you mentioned, transferring domains away from Shopify can take up to 7-10 days to complete if successful. If, after this period of time the domain has not transferred successfully, you can reach back out to our Support team directly to get assistance with accessing your closed store to re-attempt the domain transfer. Your store will need to be in good standing (no outstanding invoices).
Please note that your domain must’ve been purchased at least 60 days prior to be eligible for transfer. Further, If your domain has a .co.uk, .eu, or .be extension, you cannot transfer it yourself, so you’ll need to contact our Support team directly since we can’t offer account-specific support on the Community at this time.
