Can I update Dawn theme with code changes?

Hi guys,

I’ve searched the questions about updating a theme and I keep reading that you can’t automatically update when you’ve made too many code changes. The only code changes I’ve made for this particular website, is the powered by in the footer (changed it to my credits).

Although when I check my code files, there are green dots everywhere. It seems like even when you just change the color or add a block into the editor it’s already changing the code files. That means there is no way to update the theme unless you change absolutely nothing in the editor? Or am I missing something ;).

I’m on Dawn 2.4.0 and really want to update to a newer version, since I’m missing a lot of features. This is one of my older websites build over approx. 1 year ago. Hope someone can help me out. I’ve switched from Wordpress to Shopify for many reasons, but I think it’s very odd to make al customizations done in the editor such as colours/typo/logo’s all over again when you want to update the theme. Maybe with a migrate-tool or app or something?

Hi @Mac15 , Thank you for taking the time replying :). So I have to copy every (liquid) file in the ‘edit code’ section from the new theme one by one and paste it int my current theme? Or the other way around; copy all my current files and paste it into the new theme; wouldn’t all the features be overwritten by the ‘old’ version one?

:joy: ?I don’t get it which code I need to copy: theme.liquid?

And do I copy the code from the new theme and paste it into my existing theme to update?
