I would like to make a donation for each item purchased. I would like to use a code so the customer has control of the donation being made. So Ideally, I will donate $1 for each item purchased given a code, like “DONATE”. And even more ideally, a dollar for each item sold would be credited to a specific account.
Right now, with what I currently know, I can simply make the donation a global offer without a code and periodically count the items sold and make the correct donation manually.
So my questions are : Is there any mechanism for donating part of the purchase price? Is there a way to use a code to trigger the donation?

It’s also fantastic for visitor engagement and building a relationship with consumers that care about your cause. While I don’t have an expertise in coding, the Shopify App Store might have some solutions for your business donation needs.
The Easy Donation app lets your customers donate a portion of the order to a charity. There is also the Pay What You Want app, which allows customers to donate any amount they want, and their donation is tracked and processed. If those don’t seem suitable, you can browse through other donation apps here.
As for tracking of the “DONATE” discount code, that would need to be done manually. You can track the use of a discount code in your Sales by Discount report, found in your Sales Reports.
To clarify, are you wanting a dollar for each item sold to be credit to a customer account? If you’re wanting to add a credit to a customer account based on use of discount code, this too would need to be accomplished manually. If you’re on the Shopify Professional Plan or higher, you can issue your customers a free gift card. Alternatively, there are store credit apps that can help you with offering store credit, like Rise.ai ‑ Gift Cards & Loyalty. You can have a look at other store credit app options as well.

Wow! A very information packed t reply. I think I’ll start by looking at the apps. But just to clarify: I’m selling politically themed t-shirts and want to donate a dollar per purchase to the candidate in the presidential general election.
I am starting to think it will be easiest if I just count the items sold and make the donation manually. That way I can still use the code as a discount. I’ll check out the apps first.
@Light-em-Up - curious if you found an app for this use. I am looking to do the same exact this for a product we are selling where for every product sold we will donate $1 to specific charities.
