Hi, i have created my store and planning to choose shopify payments (uk based); however, I dont have uk national identity card because i’m from Pakistan. Now shopify want me to submitt utility bill for address confirmation as well as national identity card. So the question is that is it fine to submitt my Pakistani national identity card? I do have my uk utility bills that will confirm the address (bills dont have my name).
Topic summary
A store owner from Pakistan wants to use Shopify Payments for their UK-based store but lacks UK identification documents. They have UK utility bills for address verification, but these bills don’t show their name.
Shopify Payments UK Requirements:
- UK government-issued photo ID (passport or driving license)
- Proof of UK residential address in the account owner’s name
- Business owner must be a UK resident
The Problem:
Pakistani national ID cards are not accepted for UK Shopify Payments. Additionally, utility bills without the owner’s name won’t satisfy verification requirements. The user does not currently meet eligibility criteria.
Suggested Alternative:
Community members recommend using WallidPay, a third-party payment processor that:
- Doesn’t require UK ID or residency
- Accepts non-resident business owners
- Integrates directly with Shopify via their app store
- Offers fast onboarding and payouts
The discussion remains unresolved regarding Shopify Payments specifically, but a viable workaround has been identified.
Hi, @Atta1 .
Welcome to the Shopify Community and thanks for sharing your question here.
In regards to onboarding with Shopify Payments, you’ll need to submit the following identity documents for verification:
- Passport
- Driver license
- Resident permit
- Citizen Card
- Electoral ID
- Validate UK
When submitting your personal address documents, it must show your full name and address. You can find more information on Shopify Payments requirements in our resource here. I also recommend contacting our support team through the Shopify Help Center if any further information is required.
It looks like you may be getting started with Shopify. I’d like to share our blog resource on How to start an online store in 9 steps to help you get started.
Here’s how Shopify Payments (UK) generally works:
Shopify Payments Requirements (UK):
To be eligible, Shopify Payments requires the business owner to be a UK resident and provide:
-
A UK government-issued photo ID (e.g., UK passport or driving license — not a foreign ID).
-
Proof of a UK residential address, like a utility bill or bank statement — in your name.
In Your Case:- Pakistani ID: Shopify Payments does not accept non-UK government IDs for a UK-based business. Unfortunately, your Pakistani national identity card will not be accepted.
- Utility bill without your name: This also will not be valid, as they require the document to match the person listed as the account owner.
So currently, you do not meet the requirements for Shopify Payments UK.
What You Can Do Instead:
Since Shopify Payments won’t work in this case, I recommend using a third-party payment processor that supports international business owners like yourself.
