Can no longer choose own primary myshopify name

I’m busy with making a new store and I see I’m automatically assigned a bunch of letters and numbers. Is there no way around this now? It seems messy and ugly not having my own domain.

Yes, you can still add a new domain with your own myshopify, but this one isn’t used as the primary one which shows up in a lot of places around Shopify.

Hi there, @DylanJ !

If you wish to change the myshopify.com URL you see internally displayed you can do so once by following the steps given here.

Be sure to make a note of your original myshopify URL, as this will still be used internally to refer to your account.

If you don’t wish to continue with this original domain, you can try creating a new store and entering your own myshopify.com domain instead of using an auto-generated one.

All the best!

Hi

It seems when creating a new store using an existing email / Shopify account, you cannot create your own primary myshopify. Only when creating a new store with a new email, can you create your own primary myshopify address.

This is an update that shopify did within the last few months, as it wasn’t like this with my previous store I created earlier in the year.

I will now have to create a new shopify account, make the website, then change ownership of it back to my original site. Weird workaround.

Seems a bit silly and should be fixed.

After many messages back and fourth with Shopify Support (they didn’t seem to know this change was done), I’ve unfortunately been informed:

Shopify Support:> > I’m sending this email to you as a follow-up to your query. You are correct, the behavior you are experiencing is expected and by design. The new process for the default .myshopify.com URL involves generating a system-generated alphanumeric prefix that is appended to the .myshopify.com domain.> > When you initially set up your store, a unique system-generated URL such as a5432-1.myshopify.com is assigned to your store. This URL is used for internal purposes and support-related activities.> > Although you have the option to change the visible URL that your customers see, such as customizing it to your preferred store name, the system-generated URL remains the same on the backend and for support purposes. This is to ensure consistency and maintain the integrity of your store’s data and settings.>

I find this absolutely unnecessary, and as a owner of many stores (opening more regularity) this is going to make my life rather confusing, especially when needing to refer to the “internal URL” with API calls and apps.
