Can PayPal Account Change with Active Subscriptions?

Hello!

We have a merchant planning to launch subscriptions with PayPal Express, but they’re fairly certain that they will need to use a different PayPal Express account in the future.

Can anybody confirm what happens with active subscriptions if the PayPal account is changed in Shopify settings? Can existing billing agreements be transferred to the new account?

Hi Chris,

If PayPal account is changed, the existing subscriptions that are paid with PayPal would fail to be charged.

I believe the billing agreements are tied to the specific PayPal merchant account so we don’t have support for that on our side.

The manual way to do it would be requesting all customers who paid with PayPal to update their payment method once switched to the new account.
