We are considering Shopify Basic for a produce-only farm selling to retail and wholesale customers via storefront ordering. We’d appreciate your views on how Shopify Basic can (or not) support the following needs.
Products
- We would like to maintain one master list of products (i.e. carrots) with some short marketing verbiage on their appeal (carrots are tasty, healthy, yada yada).
- Specific Offerings (i.e. 1# bunch of carrots, 10# bulk bag of carrots). It would be these product/size/package offerings that are actually purchased.
- Products & their Offerings go into and out of season so on the backend we flag them into and out of storefronts; preserving them in the database for use again next season.
Customers
- We have 5 “types” of customers and each customer must be one and only one of these types (Retail-OTC; Retail-CSA; Wholesale-Reseller; Wholesale-Consumer; Unknown). Unknowns would be the New Account default and we would reassign Unknowns into the correct Type in the backend.
- Different Customer Types’ storefront would present a different array of offerings so we need some sort of mechanism to associate an Offering with a Customer Type (i.e. only Wholesale Customers view the 10# bulk bag offering).
- A given Offering displays with different prices to different Customer Types (i.e. the 1# bag sells for $4 to Retail customers but $2.50 to Wholesale).
- Just 2 price levels per Offering; Retail & Wholesale
- Wholesale prices per Offering can be defined either by a) a fixed dollar price, or b) a flat discount percentage applied to the retail price.
Shopify looks like it can perform our other needs, But this core need to present slightly different customer-type-specific storefronts, each with its own array of offerings and pricing, is essential to us.
We welcome your thoughts. And if there is an Add-On that’ll facilitate this solution, please let us know.
Many Thanks!
