Can Shopify Work for Local Service-Based Businesses Like Cleaning Companies?

Topic summary

A local cleaning company is exploring whether Shopify can support service-based businesses beyond traditional e-commerce. They’re interested in four main capabilities:

Core Features Needed:

  • Digital gift cards for cleaning services
  • Selling eco-friendly cleaning products
  • Online booking/scheduling system
  • Local delivery for cleaning kits

Community Responses Confirm Viability:

Gift Cards & Product Sales: Both are native Shopify features requiring no additional apps. Gift cards support custom amounts, automated email delivery, and branded messaging.

Booking & Scheduling: Requires third-party apps since not native to Shopify. Recommended solutions include Cowlendar (highest-ranked booking app with existing cleaning company users), Sesami, BookThatApp, and Acuity Scheduling via Zapier. These enable calendar-based bookings, staff assignments, payment options, and automated reminders.

Local Delivery: Native Shopify features allow defining delivery zones, minimum order requirements, and scheduled delivery windows.

Marketing Tools: Platform supports blogging, landing pages, review collection apps (like Kudosi), and integration with email/social media campaigns.

Multiple respondents confirm cleaning companies successfully use Shopify for these purposes, with live examples available upon request.

I’m part of a local cleaning company called Hellamaid, and we’ve been exploring new ways to grow and reach more people. I know Shopify is mainly seen as an e-commerce platform, but I’m wondering if it could also be a good fit for local, service-based businesses like ours.
We’re considering offering things like:

  1. Digital gift cards for cleaning services
  2. Eco-friendly cleaning products for sale
  3. A smoother online booking or scheduling system
  4. Local delivery for cleaning kits or bundles

Is anyone here using Shopify for anything similar like booking appointments, offering on-location services, or using it as a marketing front for physical services?

Hello @umarkhan-1

Here’s how you could set it up:

1. Sell digital gift cards
Shopify’s native gift-card feature lets you create e-gift certificates that customers can purchase and redeem online or in person. You can:

  • Offer preset values (e.g. $50, $100) or let customers enter a custom amount
  • Automate delivery via email with your own branding and messaging

2. Retail your eco-friendly supplies
Add your cleaning products as regular “inventory” items. You can:

  • Bundle kits (e.g. “Starter Eco Kit”) and track stock automatically
  • Highlight testimonials right on product pages with an app like Kudosi for social proof

3. Take bookings & appointments
Use a Shopify app built for scheduling—popular picks include:

  • Sesami or BookThatApp for calendar-based bookings and staff assignments
  • Acuity Scheduling (via Zapier integration) if you need more complex service-type flows
  • These apps let customers pick dates/times, pay (or pay later), and get automatic reminders.

4. Handle local delivery or pickup
Shopify’s Local Delivery and Store Pickup options let you:

  • Define delivery zones and minimums (e.g. free delivery within 5 mi on orders over $75)
  • Schedule delivery windows so you’re not out driving at midnight

5. Market your services

  • Use Shopify’s blogging and landing-page templates to publish cleaning tips, case studies, and before-&-after galleries.
  • Collect reviews in one place (via Kudosi) and use them in your email campaigns or on Facebook/Instagram ads.

Hi @umarkhan-1 :slightly_smiling_face:

Let me answer your questions one by one :

  1. gift card is a native Shopify feature, so you should not have any issue there
  2. ecom is also a native shopify feature, so it should be pretty easy for you to sell your cleaning products haha
  3. there are several booking apps on Shopify (it’s not a shopify native feature, you’ll need an app for that). I’ve built Cowlendar over the past few years which is the behighest ranked booking app on shopify (you can check the ranking here : top booking app ) . Hundreds of shops like yours are using my app for their cleaning company. Let me know if you want to see any live example?
  4. its just about selling products, which already is question three haha

Let me know if you need any guidance, i’m happy to help
