Can someone explain how getting paid works

Hi there,

I’d like to speak to an actual live representative of Shopify but I don’t see where that is an option. Can someone tell me (who does print on demand) how getting paid works? I know Shopify charges the customer and then the site owner pays the app that is fulfilling the order, but the profit remains in Shopify. So how do we retrieve our profit from Shopify and how long does it take?

Thanks for any help y’all can provide.

Hi @Fritzy ,

Thank you for getting in touch and for asking your question, as understanding how you get paid when running an online store is of course important.

If you sell with a Print-on-Demand model, two separate transactions take place—first the customer pays you, the merchant, for the product on your store, and you then pay the print-on-demand service for the cost of manufacturing and shipping the product to the customer. When the customer completes their checkout on your store they’ll choose a payment method to make their payment, over which you have control. You can use gateways such as Shopify Payments to accept payments via credit card and can also accept PayPal and other payment methods if you wish.

To make a profit on a product, you’ll need the money you receive from the customer—the cost of the product and shipping charges, minus any processing or transaction fees—to be greater than what you have to pay to the Print-on-Demand service for them to fulfill the order.

I would recommend checking out our Print-on-Demand guide, titled “Build a Print-on-Demand Empire”, available for free to Shopify merchants on our learning hub, Compass. This is a comprehensive course that goes into great detail on running a Print-on-Demand business and covers numerous aspects of how to make it a success.
