We are a marketplace (yet to launch) and would like to use Shopify in conjunction with Stripe Connect to power the marketplace. I have a development team who are tailoring Shopify for a two-sided marketplace, however, as we are based in the UK, we are unsure if Stripe Connect works for a UK-based store:
Great question! When it comes to Shopify and Stripe, we’ve actually built a connection between the two which we call Shopify Payments! It’s our recommended payment gateway and it’s actually powered by Stripe, which is why in countries where this gateway is available, Stripe won’t be an option. So in your case, Shopify Payments is available in the UK, and that would be your best bet.

I understand that Shopify Payments is powered by Stripe. However, in my case I want to use the marketplace payments capability of Stripe Connect so we can manage how we take payment from the buyer and pay the seller.
Therefore, if I understand correctly, Shopify Payments is not capable of managing marketplace payments, correct?
If this is the case, can you tell me how I enable Stripe in the UK so we can use Stripe Connect? If we operated a basic eCommerce platform then Shopify Payments is an obvious choice.
Can you enable my Shopify account to use Stripe Connect?
If not, is it possible to use a hybrid of Shopify Payments for taking the payment from the customer and we can then connect Shopify Payments to Stripe Connect in order to pay the seller and handle our commission?
I’m not familiar with Stripe Connect myself, but looking at the link you sent, it seems that you can automatically set up your payouts to be sent to other people. With Shopify Payments, that isn’t a feature we have. How our payment gateway works is that once you get an order, we send you that payout directly to the bank account of your choosing. If there is a way for you to set up Stripe Connect for sending out money once you receive it, that would be something you would need to do outside of Shopify.
Additionally, at this time, there is no way to enable Stripe in countries where Shopify Payments is offered. That said, I can definitely see how this would be beneficial for your business model specifically. I will pass this feedback along to our team for sure!
