Does anyone know if the limit can still be lifted?

Update: A staff member confirms the cap can be lifted by application only. It’s a very rare, case-by-case exception and never guaranteed.
Eligibility guidance: Typically considered for stores that inherently need high SKU (stock keeping unit) volumes (e.g., automotive parts, paint). Generally not considered: print‑on‑demand or dropshipping stores.
Action steps: If you think you qualify, contact Shopify Support via the Help Center. Log in, create a support request (live chat, email, or callback), enter your request in “Ask about a topic,” proceed to “Get Support,” then select “Continue.”

As mentioned in the linked thread, the restriction can be lifted by application only. This is not guaranteed and is a very rare exception we make, but is a possibility.
To set your expectations, this lift is generally only provided for stores that require a high volume of SKUs due to the nature of the products they sell. For example automotive parts, or paint stores. Types of stores that would not qualify would be print-on-demand or dropshipping stores. Keep in mind, no matter the type of business, the lift will never be guaranteed and is provided on a case-by-case basis.
