Can We Create Multiple Layers of Collections/Folders for Advanced Menu Navigation?

My store, which uses the theme “Warehouse”, currently can only have 2 layers of menu levels before the final product.

The general 3 level structure is: [category] > [collection] > [product]. Shopify appears to be built for this setup, and lets you see a nice visual layout when looking at ‘All Collections’.

It also is optimize to show a layout of this 3 layer structure on the left side collection widget:

Which shows the first 2 layers: [category] > [collection]

The issue is that we’d like to have the ability to nest deeper…potentially to 6 levels. To see an example of precisely what we have in mind, checkout this non-Shopify store (mep.ca) and view this nav path:“Products” tab > Controls > Lenze/AC Tech > Inverters > Inverter Drives SMV Nema 1 > 120v.

As you can see, this site allows for essentially a 6-layer nesting, where you can have essentially many folders (i.e., Shopify’s Collections) nested within folders until getting to a final product. And once you arrive at the final destination, you can see the full navigational pathway laid out level by level:

After a brief chat with Shopify support, they told me that the current 3 layer structure is what they can natively support, however, it may be possible to create a custom solution and that I should post a question here.

So here are my questions:

  • Is it possible to create a Shopify menu / navigational layout beyond the native 3 layers?
  • Is it possible to show the navigational pathway, like from the mep.ca example above so that the user can see the full path and all layers of their navigation?

Hi @MikeStecksoft ,

I checked and it needs to change a lot with the code so it will be hard for someone else to help you with it.

I recommend you contact the theme directly, they will check and send you a detailed quote for it.

Or you can hire experts at the group: https://community.shopify.com/c/Shopify-Ecommerce-Jobs/bd-p/shopify-job-board

They will help you check it quickly.

Hope it helps!
