Can you Change a Free Theme to be as good as a Paid for Theme?

Is it possible to add functionality to make the Free Dawn theme as good as a paid for theme?

Hi, @Nice2CU . I’m happy to look into this with you! Can you tell us more about the type of functionality you’re hoping to add?

There are definitely many areas of free themes you can update. For example, you can customize your theme templates with sections, blocks, and apps to change how a theme looks and functions. This guide on editing themes goes over many of these options. This guide on extending the functionality of your theme with apps can help as well. If there’s something you’re looking for that isn’t mentioned in those guides, it’s likely still possible for you to do. You can edit your theme code to customize your theme even further. This guide on editing theme code explains more about this.

I see that you’re currently using the Dawn theme, which is a great option to start with! That being said, I also recommend you take a look at our other free themes in our theme store here as you may find another one that’s more tailored to your business.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

I would like to add the following functions to Dawn if possible?:

  • Back to top button
  • sticky header
  • pop up form

Thank you,

Chris

Of course! Most paid themes started from free themes anyways. What kind of customizations were you looking to make?

I would like to add the following features to the Dawn theme for my store nice2cu.com:

  1. Back to top button
  2. sticky header
  3. pop up form

Thank you.

Chris

Hi, @Nice2CU . Thank you for getting back to me with that information. I can definitely share some suggestions for the features you want to add. Let me know if there’s anything else you’re working on as well!

There isn’t a setting in the Dawn theme that allows you to enable a “Back to top” button. That being said, this can still be done in other ways. For example, there are some third party apps in our app store here that can help with this. This can also be accomplished by editing your theme code. We have a guide on editing theme code here and I found a thread in the Shopify Community with some advice on how to add a “Back to top” button here. I can’t guarantee the advice in that thread will work, but it may help if you decide to try this by editing your theme code. If you’re not comfortable coding on your own, you can also hire a Shopify expert to assist you. Shopify experts are trusted, third-party agencies and freelancers who offer services for Shopify merchants, including help with customizing themes. You can hire a Shopify expert on this page and you can learn more about them here.

To add a sticky header using Dawn, you can set this up within your theme editor settings. To get there go to Online store > Themes > Customize. From here, select the Header section to open the settings for that section. In these settings you will find the Sticky header setting where you will have different options you can select. For example, you can set up the Sticky header to appear On scroll up, or Always, among a couple of other options. I’ve included an example of this below. This guide on using sections and blocks to customize your theme can help as well.

For a pop up form, I recommend using the Shopify Forms app. Using this app, you can create a customizeable pop-up form that prompts your customers to join your email marketing list, and captures customer information in a privacy-compliant way. You can find the Shopify Forms app in the app store here. We also have more information on using the Shopify Forms app in our Help Center here.
