Thanks for reaching out here with your question.

Yes the Order ID Format can be modified from the admin. Shopify automatically generates sequential numbers for all orders. The first order number assigned is always 1001 and each subsequent order is automatically incremented by one, i.e., 1002, 1003, etc.

If you would like to change that, please log in into your admin, head to Settings > Store details and scroll down to Order ID format. See my screenshot below.

The OP was referring to Purchase Order numbers, not Order Numbers for customers. Is there a way to set the starting PO number?

To answer your question, the option to customize the PO number is currently not available.

Nevertheless, I can see how beneficial this feature would be though, so it is certainly something I will submit to our team of developers to consider as an update to the use of Purchase Orders on your behalf. Can you share with me why you think this would be beneficial to you and your business?

Migrated from another E-Commerce platform to Shopify, where my last purchase order raised was assigned the number P00103.. Obviously the first ever Purchase Order I raise on Shopify will be P01 but I’d like the option to force it to be P00104 just for completeness.

I’m looking for this functionality also, to name my purchase orders instead based on invoice/quote numbers from my suppliers so I can instantly match them up for budget and inventory tracking purposes. There’s no reason we shouldn’t be able to input these numbers manually.

It is crucial that the PO number can be altered, and not just a series of numbers. I order on my vendors site, from that, they give me a purchase order number I retain, then, when they give me the invoice, I match it to the purchase order and add the shipping and discounts. my search on the tags doesn’t seem to do a decent job (which is where I put my po number and invoice number) so it is a constant hassle to look up and find the right PO to receive the inventory. I see it’s been a year on this thread, so…

Setting your own PO # is pretty basic functionality that is definitely needed. This thread is over 2 years old, will this be implemented soon?

So Shopify is forcing migration from Stocky, but providing no way to have continuity with purchase order numbers from where we left off in Stocky.
