I’ve been buying my labels directly through Canada Post but am now looking at using Shopify. What additional charges can I expect when buying through Shopify?
For example this is the label cost when purchased through Shopify with this caveat: “This amount is an estimate and is subject to taxes and conversion rates at time of billing.”
Subtotal $25.03
Shopify plan discount -$5.25
Total $19.78 CAD
Amount billed $14.72 USD
When I buy direct from Canada Post:
Shipping Service Price $18.89
Additional Options $0.00
Small business savings -$2.88
Fuel surcharges $5.20
Total before taxes $21.21
Taxes $1.06
Shipment total $22.27

Shopify will bill you for the purchase of the shipping label but we do not charge extra fees on top of what you’ve paid when buying the label directly in the admin. Shopify has negotiated rates with Canada Post that merchants can take advantage of when they buy their shipping labels via our Shopify Shipping feature. These rates will often be cheaper compared to merchants buying labels from Canada Post directly.

When will we be able to purchase additional insurance coverage through Shopify Shipping with Canada Post? The only coverage available is $100, which does not cover us when more expensive parcels go missing in transit.
We are able to purchase additional coverage through when we use the Canada Post website directly, but then we can’t take advantage of the Shopify discounts, and takes additional time to process. If we are able to add Age Verification and Required Signatures through Shopify Shipping, then why not additional insurance coverage?
This option is available to Shopify customers in the USA, but for some reason, not your customers in Canada. Why?
As of now, we are on the hook for the remaining value of the lost items which really hurts small businesses like ours.

Thank you for your post and for letting us know why you’d like the option to have shipping insurance when purchasing Canada Post labels directly via Shopify. We made shipping insurance for Shopify Shipping available for eligible merchants in the United States in 2022 but at this time is not an option for merchants in any other countries where Shopify Shipping labels can be purchased.
I appreciate that this is frustrating and your current best course of action would be to continue purchase insurance directly from Canada Post. We may expand eligiblity for our shipping insurance in future although I do not have any timeline I can share. We do welcome merchant feedback on this as it helps inform how we evolve our platform over time, and I’ll be sure to pass your request onto our development team.

The added insurance for Canada Post has been something i have been asking Shopify for since 2020. There is no reason for it to not be in place. I called the Canada Post IT department about it & they said it’s a 5 minute plug-in that a high school level programmer could install.
I don’t think Shopify understands how it damages our income to have to buy our labels from Canada Post when the sale is on Shopify. I have an order valued over $100 today & will lose 30% of my net profit from that order having to buy the shipping label from Canada Post.
There’s no legitimate excuse for a corporation the size of Shopify to not spend the 5 minutes to add this plug-in for Canadian based shops.

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us on this matter and for outlining why it is important for you to have insurance for Canada Post shipping labels purchased via Shopify. I know this is something other Canadian merchants have requested and our development team are aware that this would be an important feature addition to them. I will pass your comments onto our team and I hope that this is something we can make available in future.
I would use Shopify shipping as well - If they had signature and added insurance option. Why is this not an option?

Yes, correct. This is the tax-inclusive price of the label and the final amount you will pay for it.
