Quick question:
when buying the Shopify basic monthly plan, is there any lock up time or can I cancel my account whenever I feel like it? For example: Can I cancel my subscription and stop paying after 2 months or do I have to pay each month for a year?

You’re not tied to the monthly subscription for a fixed period of time so you can deactivate your store whenever you wish to do so. The same goes with annual plans, you can cancel your subscription anytime. Since you pay the subscription at the beginning of the billing cycle, any unused amount will be credited to your account if you cancel before the billing cycle ends and will be utilized towards future subscription invoices.
While you can deactivate and cancel your store anytime, note that you also have the option to pause your store for a reduced fee of $9 USD/month. The Pause and Build plan allows you to access your admin and edit your store but checkout access will be disabled.
