Cancelled Unfulfilled orders forever in notifications

Topic summary

Merchants report that cancelled and refunded orders with “unfulfilled” status persist in notification counts and order lists, disrupting workflow by inflating the number of orders requiring attention. This issue has persisted for years (first reported in 2022, continuing through January 2025).

Current Workarounds:

  • Manually archive orders
  • Set up saved search filters to show only “paid” and “unfulfilled” orders
  • Review and clear orders stuck in “Open” status
  • Some report notifications eventually disappear after 1-2 weeks

Merchant Frustrations:

  • The order count includes cancelled/archived orders that require no action
  • One merchant reports over 100 cancelled orders permanently inflating their notification count
  • The number becomes increasingly meaningless as cancelled orders accumulate over time

Shopify’s Position:

  • Staff acknowledge this is “intended behavior” rather than a bug
  • Feedback has been forwarded to developers multiple times since 2022
  • No timeline provided for a fix
  • Updates will be shared in the official Changelog when available

Status: The thread is marked “Solved” despite no actual fix being implemented, causing additional merchant frustration. The issue remains unresolved with only partial workarounds available.

Yep, it has apparently been going on for multiple years. I found another thread just a bit ago that discussed this exact same issue, so it’s clear @Shopify_77 doesn’t care enough about its users to fix an issue that so many people are very vocally upset about. It’s especially disappointing because it doesn’t even seem like it would be THAT hard of a thing to fix? I don’t code but I can’t imagine it’s more complicated than any other functions on this site.
