Telephone number on checkout is no longer enforced as required, even with the setting enabled. A screenshot and store link were shared to show the configuration and behavior.
Latest update from support: the “Shipping address phone number” requirement now only applies when shipping is required. For digital products or orders without shipping, the setting no longer applies to billing details. This appears to be a recent change; previously it applied to both shipping and billing.
Impact: multiple users report similar inconsistencies (e.g., Phone and Company fields showing despite being deactivated), suggesting broader checkout field toggle issues.
Workarounds discussed:
Change labels to signal requirement (e.g., edit “Optional phone label” to say “Mandatory” and adjust the phone tooltip under Checkout contact). This only changes text and does not enforce validation.
Share stores and contact Shopify Support so cases are logged and a fix/option can be considered.
Status: no official fix or setting to require phone for non-shipping/digital checkouts. Issue remains open; users are advised to contact support to escalate.
The Telephone Number field in my checkout page has suddenly become optional (it used to be required) even though my settings are set as required. I am unable to change it.

Can you confirm that you have the “required” option selected for Shipping address phone number in your checkout settings? If you do have required selected consider sharing your store so the members can see what the checkout looks like.
Looks like there is no answer to why this is happening. As a, stop-gap measure, we changed the text from Phone (optional) to Phone (required). But it still doesn’t solve the underlying issue. Not sure if anyone else experiencing this, or have a solution.
i have the same problem, mobile phone and Company were desactivated and still on settings, but i can see them on checkout page, i tried to activate and desactivate them, and still same problem
I reached out to the support and it seems like the setting for shipping number required is now only if shipping is required. If you have a digital product that does not require shipping, this setting does not seem to apply to the billing details.
