Thank you! That was exactly what I did, and the new templates appear when I open that dropdown in the editor. However, when I go to pages to assign the template I created, the only option is “default template” and the “contact us”. How do I make it appear as options to assign as new template? Do I need special permissions for that?
Topic summary
Main issue: New pages (e.g., FAQ, T&C, Contact) all display the same content because only two template choices appear (“Default page” and “Contact”), and multiple pages are using the same default template. Editing navigation links doesn’t change the template used.
Key fixes shared:
- In the Theme Editor, use the top template dropdown (“default template”) to Create template for each unique page, then assign those templates to specific pages. This prevents pages from sharing the same layout/content.
- Templates often only appear in the Pages admin if the theme containing them is the Published (Live) theme. Publish the theme or set up pages/templates in the live theme (e.g., Dawn) so they’re assignable; draft themes then reflect those pages/navigation.
Outcomes: Original poster resolved it by creating pages/templates from the Theme Editor and assigning them. Several users confirmed similar success; a screenshot was referenced to show the dropdown.
Open questions: Some still only see “Default” and “Contact” in Pages; uncertainty about needing special permissions, why templates vanish in draft themes, and how this behaves with child themes. Discussion remains active; no formal decision.
Hey Cheeehoo, running into the same issue, I have the page setup, using the appropriate page theme, however its not showing in the top drop down menu only; default and contact, do I need to temporarily go live in order for the pages to show up/ be available? Very Surprised there isn’t more information regarding this.
I am trying to create a new Based theme but its the same: Default Page or Contact. When I choose Default Its the same pages, And when i choose Contact Its the same Page, Contact. So What I need to do?

can you show me?
If your experiencing an issue when you only see on pages "Default page " or “contact”, Firstly, you need to PUBLISH the theme and only then you will see other templates on the pages.
So you mean I have to edit the theme itself and then it will apply to my child theme?
