Can't connect Domain because it's already connected to a Shopify store

Every time I try and connect my domain name i get the message:

Can’t connect "… " because it’s already connected to a Shopify store.

“Already connected to a Shopify store” error means the domain was once owned and connected by some other store owner on Shopify. Even though now you own the domain, Shopify recognizes that it’s still connected to another account.
