Can't send emails get error 'Email address cannot receive email at this time.'

Topic summary

A Shopify store owner encountered an email delivery error (‘Email address cannot receive email at this time’) after making DNS changes in Cloudflare. The issue appeared after successfully fixing a separate problem where order confirmation links incorrectly displayed ‘shopify.com’ instead of the custom domain.

Background:

  • Domain purchased from Porkbun with DNS managed through Cloudflare
  • DMARC records configured and domain authenticated
  • Test orders worked fine initially

Recent Changes:

  • Added a CNAME record (orders.domain → shops.myshopify.com) to fix incorrect order confirmation URLs
  • Email delivery stopped working immediately after this change

Suggested Solutions:

  • Re-authenticate the domain in Shopify Settings > Notifications
  • Verify all DNS records (CNAME and TXT) are correctly configured in Cloudflare
  • Test emails across different providers (Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook)
  • Consider reverting recent CNAME changes to identify conflicts
  • Alternatively, edit email templates directly in Shopify rather than modifying DNS

The discussion remains open with troubleshooting in progress. Contact with Shopify Support may be necessary if suggested fixes don’t resolve the issue.

I did a test order today and I didn’t get the order confirmation email I get this error ‘Email address cannot receive email at this time.’ I using cloudflare for my DNS records. I have the dmarc record on cloudflare and my domain is successfully authenticated. I brought the domain from porkbun.

Yesterday I did a test order as well and everything worked I got the email confirmation with no issues. The only issue I had was when I got order confirmation email and clicked on view order I got this ’ https://shopify.com.my domain/orders/xxxxx’ . It had my domain but it had shopify so I was able to fix today by going to clouldflare and putting a cname and putting orders.my domain and at the end shops.myshopify.com. So replace shopify.com to orders and it worked and now I’m having the issue of not sending emails and not even to myself? Is there a way to fix it?

Hi @RASZER

I’m sorry to hear you’re experiencing issues with your order confirmation emails and domain settings. Let’s tackle these problems one by one.

1. Error: ‘Email address cannot receive email at this time.’

This error can be frustrating, especially when everything seemed fine before. Here’s what we can do:

  • Re-authenticate Your Domain: Even if your domain shows as authenticated, sometimes re-authenticating can resolve hidden issues. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Notifications. In the Sender email section, click on Authenticate and follow the prompts.
  • Check DNS Records: Since you’re using Cloudflare, double-check that all necessary DNS records, especially CNAME and TXT records, are correctly set up. Incorrect or missing records can cause email delivery problems.
  • Test with Different Email Providers: Sometimes, specific email providers might block or filter out emails. Try sending test emails to addresses from different providers (e.g., Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook) to see if the issue is isolated to a particular service.

2. Incorrect URL in Order Confirmation Emails

It’s great that you identified the issue with the order confirmation links pointing to ‘shopify.com’ and attempted a fix. However, modifying DNS records can sometimes lead to unintended consequences.

  • Review Recent DNS Changes: Undo the recent CNAME changes you made to see if that resolves the email sending issue. It’s possible that the modification is causing conflicts.
  • Edit Email Templates: Instead of DNS changes, you can directly edit the order confirmation email template to ensure links point to your custom domain. In your Shopify admin, navigate to Settings > Notifications, then select Order confirmation under Email templates. Here, you can manually adjust the URLs to reflect your domain.

If these steps don’t resolve the issues, it might be beneficial to reach out to Shopify Support or consult with a professional familiar with Shopify and DNS settings.

If you need any other assistance, I am willing to help.

Best regards,

Daisy.
