Card reader not pulling names or data during transaction

For the past 5 years, we have been using chip and swipe readers. As of Monday, May 8, 2023, the card reader no longer pulls customer data from the card when dipping the chip. All it gives us is “no customer”. All of our apps and firmware are up to date. We have not made any major changes.

Shopify Support is telling me that it is the bank’s decision to share the data during a transaction. I tested this by using my card at a different local business with a different system. It pulled my data. I tried a transaction with our system using the same card and got “no customer”.

It is also having this issue with chip and tap as well.

Why is this no longer pulling data? Are they planning on upcharging for this very basic and necessary feature? Who else is having this problem?

No, but what I have found out is it works perfectly fine on our mobile Android based units. It pulls data like usual. It appears to be something isolated to the iPad version.

If you updated the iPad Shopify POS app 8.9.0 (we did on May 15th, 2023) then you won’t get customer names with the chip and swipe reader (little white one). Fortunately we had one iPad we didn’t update (sure wish there was a way to downrev an app or pick a rev you want to use) so limping by with one register. When I contacted Shopify about this on 5/22 they said they were aware of the issue and going to fix it - not sure I believe that or not.

Does anyone know if this issue has been resolved? We have not been using the chip readers lately but will be in October, so trying to understand why we cannot get customer information and how to resolve this.

An update from a few weeks ago fixed the issue on chips, but not on tap.
You have to add the customer manually with tap.
I’m still very annoyed that instead of admitting there was an issue and
saying they were on top of it, I just kept being told that it’s someone
else’s fault when it clearly wasn’t.
This, On top of them trying to force us to use “shopify experts” for API
integrations and other upgrades, I am seriously losing faith in this
company.
