We need to change this in our settings. We accidentally set our company to Public, but it is a private company. Can this be done? We do not want to create a new business entity I ask, because of the message that you get from Shopify: “Changing the country or business type creates a new business entity. The current entity (1224.COM.AU) won’t be changed” If the only way is to create a new entity, what does it mean for our current store? Can we still use it under private. Also, if it were to stay listed as public, would this cause GMC to flag it as a misrepresentation?
You have to create new entity then switch to the new entity.
Not sure about elsewhere, but in the US Shopify treats Personal and Sole Proprietorship the same and it doesn’t affect anything like Shopify Payments. More like a classification really.

As far as I know, changing the business type creates a new business entity, but it doesn’t create a new Shopify store. Your existing store should continue to work, though you may need to review tax and payment details after the change.
Regarding Google Merchant Center, I don’t think having your business type set as Public instead of Private would, by itself, be treated as misrepresentation. GMC mainly checks that your business information, contact details, and policies are accurate and consistent.
If you’re concerned about the impact on your current setup, it’s worth confirming with Shopify Support before making the change.

Yes you can change it but if Shopify says it will create a new business entity you can still use your store. The new entity is refering to the business information and compliance settings and does not mean a new storefront. See how this impacts your tax, billing, and verification prior to changing. Your business information should match with your official business records in Google Merchant Center, so changing it to the right entity type would be the best way to prevent any inconsistencies.

Creating a new entity just updates your business details. Your store, products, and orders stay the same. Nothing breaks.
And yes, Google Merchant Center can flag you for having the wrong business type, so fix it soon to be safe.
