Hello! We offer free shipping on our store for orders over $100 within the US. However, a customer recently let us know that they had the option to select any shipping option, including overnight air, for free. How do I change it so that they can only select like, USPS ground for free shipping? Thanks so much!
Topic summary
A merchant discovered that customers qualifying for free shipping (orders over $100) could select premium options like overnight air at no charge, instead of being limited to standard ground shipping.
Solutions proposed:
-
One suggestion involved using the PluginHive Multi-Carrier Shipping Label app to restrict free shipping to specific carrier options, though this requires a carrier account and enabling Carrier Calculated Shipping (CCS) in Shopify.
-
The original poster found a workaround by deleting their free shipping rate and creating an “economy shipping” rate with a $100 minimum order value instead. This approach limits customers to only the intended shipping method when qualifying for free shipping.
Related issue:
Another participant mentioned a different concern about free shipping appearing as the default option at checkout (rather than restricting which methods qualify), which Shopify support indicated might require custom coding to resolve.
Hi @Seirye !
Shopify’s native settings don’t allow for restricting free shipping to specific options.
However, you can achieve this by using the PluginHive Multi-Carrier Shipping Label app. With this app, you can connect your carrier account with shopify and set up an automation rule to manage free shipping:
- Orders under $100 show carrier rates at checkout.
- Orders over $100 display only the free shipping option.
Once set up, this system will only show the standard free shipping option at Shopify checkout for eligible orders over $100.
Additionally for label printing, you can set ‘UPS Ground’ as the default service for orders over $100, ensuring the correct label is generated seamlessly.
[ Note: To make this possible with the application, there are two requirements: having your carrier account and enabling the Carrier Calculated Shipping (CCS) feature in Shopify to display rates at checkout. ]
If anyone is curious, I figured out a solution after a couple days of playing and with help from this reply! I deleted our free shipping, added a rate for economy shipping, and set the minimum price to $100 (our minimum price for free shipping in the US). Hope this helps someone else!
Hi Thanks for the reply. I use Shipx and the free shipping comes from cart total over £70. It now sits at the top of Shipping method. Ship x say it is controlled from the Shopify side. I sometimes have 3 choices and they are governed by lowest cost on top, and therefore free will always be on top.

i was told by Shopify that it could be done by someone who understands coding. Sopify also said try the forum.
