Hi there,

We run a Shopify website that sells yak cheese and I’m looking for advice on how to optimize my product pages for both user experience and SEO.

From an user experience perspective, having a single product page is convenient for customers to browse and compare different product variants. However, from an SEO perspective, having separate pages for each product variant can help improve search engine rankings and make it easier for customers to find my products.

I would like to know how I can change the URL of my product page for every product variant seamlessly so that I can have both the benefits of a single product page and separate pages for each variant.

I’ve heard about dynamic URL generation and how it can be used to create unique URLs for each product variant, but I’m not sure how to implement it on my Shopify website.

Can anyone recommend a third-party app or provide guidance on how to implement dynamic URL generation to update the URL and product details on the page when a variant is selected?

Any help would be deeply appreciated. Thank you in advance!

  • Or make individual products with advanced customizations to present as 1 product with variants.
  • Or invest in a full custom stack using the storefront api.

Individual products can also be thought of as a product-family customization , or flat product model. I have some writings on in the forums about this advanced customization.

The downside/upside of individual products is unique listings are now also available for every channel.

If you’ve only heard about some technology but have no idea of the implementation details that is a red-flag a merchant is gonna burn money on a self prescribed fix with no guarantee of outcomes.

And often indicates either an XY problem or some other goal hoping technology X is the cure.

Dynamic url generation is more about search, or filtering such as on collection pages.

The closest for product pages is variant deep-linking .

Competent theme’s should already be changing the url with the variant parameter; i.e. /products/red-shirt__?variant=1234567__

That’s generally only true if there’s relevant content or intrinsic facts that are very different between products; such as ingredients, FAQ ,manufacturer, etc but not if it’s some thing like one prices is $20 and another is $80.

Which is not the same as difference between variants , if variants have drastic differences they probably should just be different products.

I would also like to implement a feature like this.

An example: We sell a product that has 10 color options. Each color currently has it’s own product page. We’d like to keep it this way but also add each color option as a variant…each variant linking to it’s pdp so the variant has the URL that we assign to it: storename.com/shirt-black; storename.com/shirt-red etc.

How do I implement this? We use Shopify Plus, Impulse theme.
