Is it possible to change ‘Special Instructions’ to a required field and add placeholder text?

I’m not sure if this is correct? Is this adding a text field to the cart?
If you want text field to the cart you can simply enable cart note from theme customization.
Mine is named as order note
this only shows up when something is added to cart

Yeah sure what theme are you using again? I can help create the fields according to that.
Suggestion:
But you see the order note are not compulsary for checkout user may ignore it.
You can add text field to product page asking “van registration #” and make it required so user will have to fill this.

Sorry I just checked but we can’t add required filed on cart note, I tried adding required field on cart note but even it was empty the checkout button worked.
Can we just add required field just above the Add to Cart so it will be visible to user?
Sorry you may have misunderstood. Please add a field which the title says ‘Van Registration or Zone Build Number (required)’ above the ‘special order instructions’ in cart. I know you can’t make it a required field, but by adding the work required in the title people will still be under the assumption it is required.
