I was just wondering if you are able to change your domain address from .com to .au because the store i am about to launch will be based in Australia and it would prove beneficial to the business if customers saw the url as .com.au

It makes language and country recommendations to your customers based on their geographic location and browser or device language. It also has an option to display a country selector in the footer of your online store that enables your customers to choose their language and country or region. Customers can accept a recommendation or use the country selector to browse your store in their preferred language and check out in their preferred currency based on the country or region selected.

That’s a great point. Having a localized domain and website will make your store more accessible to local customers and it will increase the likelihood of them placing orders and trusting your business. Since you’re targeting an Australian audience, it’s ideal to have a .com.au domain.
Now, to connect a domain with a .com.au suffix to your store, you’ll need to purchase a new domain. It’s not possible to change a domain once it’s registered and bought, however, you can still keep the .com domain and use it to target international customers if you decide to expand your business and sell internationally. When that time comes you can refer to this page to assign domains to markets and this blog post on selling internationally.
