Changing the URL of a variant to be descriptive of the product rather than a bunch of numbers

We sell linen baby play mats and until recently we listed every colour as a seperate product, but we’ve just changed it to a single product with multiple variants. The problem is if somebody google the product plus the colour we no longer rank for that term (e.g. Warren Hill linen play mat Olive). The variant URL for each colour is just a bunch of numbers, is it possible to change the URL so it’s more in line with what the actual product is, i.e.

current URL:

https://mywarrenhill.com/collections/french-linen-baby-playmats/products/round-quilted-linen-baby-play-mat?variant=39653994594398

example of what I’d like:
https://mywarrenhill.com/collections/french-linen-baby-playmats/products/round-quilted-linen-baby-play-mat?variant=Olive

Thanks,

I have the same doubt.

It is possible to create redirects. The urls are also sent to Google, so it doesn’t affect SEO.

However, these urls with codes are not friendly.

I’m having the same issue did you figure anything out? Do you know what file of code is generated the URL?

The urls of the product variants are formed as follows:

[variant-id]

According to Digismoothie: “It’s unfortunately not possible to change the existing product or variant ID. The only way to change it is to duplicate the product. The duplicate will get new IDs, but you still can’t control their format or values”.

Seems like nowadays you cannot change this [variant-id]. Hopefully a future Shopify will add an update including this feature…
