Changing theme from vintage 3rd party theme to Shopify 2.0 / Dawn 11

We have a website on Responsive 7.0, (vintage 2020 from Out of the Sand Box) and want to change to the latest Dawn theme on 2.0. I’m a bit confused about a few things. We can’t use the updater from OOTSB to update the current theme to the 2.0 version, because it has limited compatibility, according to the developer’s website. So we’d like to switch to a native theme and reduce the likelihood of such issues in the future.

Things to consider that I would like clarification on:

  1. When you install a new theme and publish it, what happens with the connection to 3rd party apps? Do they carry through and work if I change themes?
  2. Is the underlying admin of Shopify already 2.0? If I change my theme, does it automatically make all the 2.0 features accessible?
  3. If I install Dawn 11.0 to a copy of my site, can I customize it without affecting the live site that is running Responsive 7.0?
  4. Can I install different apps on the Dawn 11/Shopify 2.0 version of the site without affecting the live site that is running Responsive 7.0? We need to find a different request-a-quote solution because there have been too many issues with the current app. Also, we may want to stop using the Metafields app if we can set them up through the native metafields.
  5. Conversely, can remove apps from one theme installation but keep them on another?
  6. There were customizations done for the Responsive theme by someone else when it was setup, so I don’t know what they all were. In addition, we had to get help from a couple of the app developers as well. Will this affect a new theme installation?

App info:

  • We use a product options app on EVERY product.
  • We’re using Metafields Manager to add additional information on product pages. I would like to use the built in metafields in 2.0 instead
  • We have disabled the cart button and use a quote request app
  • We have product limits (quantity) app in use on some products
  • We use a Smart Menu (Mega Menu) for a top mega menu and use Shopify navigation for the side menu
  • Category Breadcrumbs app
  • A related products app is in use on every product
  • Sitemap generator app
  • Google Shopping feed app
  • Insert code app for to add tracking
